NYSDM: Do You Kung Fu?
by Dave

Enter the Dragon Movie Poster
This is another take on our Not Your Standard Dinner and a Movie date idea with a Chinese twist. As with all of these movie dates, the plan is to take a cultural theme and dive into it. In other words, you don’t invite someone over for steak and National Treasure, you invite them over for Chinese take-out and Enter the Dragon!

The Meal
I could suggest some authentic Chinese cuisine for you to cook, but there’s something about watching kung fu and eating take-out that just feels right. If you drink, try Chinese rice wine, the generic name is Mijiu and it can be purchased at Asian markets. Like Japanese sake, Mijiu is rice-based and can be served warm. If rice wine's not for you, Tsingtao is the only Chinese beer I'm familiar with and it offers both light and dark versions. Remember, the night is all about Chinese, so eat with chopsticks. If you don't know how, it's past time you learned:

The Movie

  • Enter the Dragon (1973)
Bruce Lee enters a martial arts tournament on an island owned by a sinister heroin and opium dealer.
  • Fist of Legend (1994)
Set in 1920’s China, Jet Li stars as a student who seeks to avenge the death of his teacher during the Japanese occupation.
  • Iron Monkey
A martial arts master has 7 days to hunt down a thief known as the Iron Monkey or his son will be killed.
  • Kun Fu Hustle
This is a very funny Kung Fu parody set in 1940’s China about a small-time thief trying to move his way up through the criminal underworld.
